Practical brief for attorneys, paralegals, and business teams.

Emails, invoices, schedules, and witness accounts may describe the same event differently. A timeline helps identify agreements, gaps, and conflicts without prematurely deciding which source is correct.

A focused approach

For each event, record the source, date shown, relevant time zone, and whether the date reflects the event itself or the creation of a record. Keep an original copy separate from working notes.

Points to address

  • Label estimated dates
  • Link every entry to its source
  • Track conflicting accounts side by side

What the findings mean

The timeline is a working tool, not a substitute for the underlying material. Update it as new information arrives and avoid silently replacing an earlier version of an account.
